This was one of our more picturesque settings for a solar install. Located in Nelson, which records New Zealand’s highest sunshine hours, the cross gable roof gave us two great spaces for the panels to receive uninterrupted sunlight. We utilised the western facing roof to get production through to the late evening.
Bill and Judy’s average power bill was $500 per month and they used 16000 kWh per year. Their energy use comprised of in-roof heating, water pump and their hot water cylinder.
While they are home most days and use power throughout the day, their consumption is greater first thing in the morning and in the evening. That’s why we installed a battery to help with their self consumption and they are making use of the delay switches on their appliances to get the most from their system.
Once we had completed our energy audit, our recommendation was a 4.2kWh system with a battery. This is a modular system and we can install more batteries once we have more data on their usage.
The system produces enough power to cover at least 50% of Bill and Judy’s of total use and in the summer months will cover 90%. The picture is a snapshot of Envoy-S that Bill and Judy use to view their power use. They saved almost 50% on this day and with some load shifting will save even more. Whatever they don’t use throughout the day is stored in the Enphase Battery for evening use.
